Minister of Justice of Georgia Meets with UN Under-Secretary-General for Human Rights
The Minister of Justice of Georgia, Paata Salia, held a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Human Rights Ilze Brands Kehris to discuss the country’s ongoing reforms in the field of human rights protection. The Minister highlighted the Ministry’s central role in advancing these reforms.
Particular attention was given to Georgia’s penitentiary system, which was presented as one of the key institutions ensuring a high standard of human rights protection. According to international assessments, the system is recognized as torture-free, with prisoner welfare safeguarded and conditions continuously improved in line with international standards.
The Minister also underscored that human rights protection and responsiveness to citizens’ needs are integral to the delivery of public services. Through digitalization and the introduction of innovative approaches, public services have become more accessible and inclusive.
The discussion further emphasized the strong and growing cooperation between Georgia and the United Nations, which has been reinforced under the five-year cooperation agreement signed in 2025.
The meeting was attended by First Deputy Minister of Justice Beka Dzamashvili, Deputy Minister Lana Morgoshia, representatives of the Ministry of Justice, and the Deputy Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations.
